IPL 2018 | Watson’s batting completely changed the game, feels Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer has expressed his disappointment about Shane Watson’s review not going their way and felt that his batting turned the game completely. He also revealed that the whole team seemed convinced that Watson was out on the first ball before he went on to score 78 off 40 deliveries.

Delhi Daredevils did get off to a flying start with the ball as Trent Boult was denied a dangerously close LBW call after he had trapped Watson plumb on the front foot. However, after numerous replays which weren’t conclusive enough, the umpire decided to give the batsman the benefit of doubt.

It was pretty much the end of DD’s evening as the Australian contributed significantly to the massive target of 211, and Shreyas Iyer has complained that the third umpire’s decision made a massive impact in the game. He also conveyed that he was not the only one who thought Watson was out, but the whole team was on the same page.

“Too many runs on the board. I would like to complain about the first ball wicket. It did not go our way and that could have made a massive impact in the match. Not only me, the whole dressing room and obviously you also think the same – that ball hit the pad first and then the bat,” said Shreyas in the post-match presentation.

Early wickets could have shifted the match in favour of the Delhi team as the Delhi bowlers were always on the back foot after that. Watson stitched an opening stand of 102 with Faf du Plessis, who scored 33. They were followed by stands by MS Dhoni and Ambati Rayudu, who scored 51 and 41 respectively, providing the finish CSK needed.

Delhi succumbed to their sixth loss of the season as they lost the match by 13 runs, which meant that they now have to win all of their remaining six games to reach the knockout stage. The captain sounded motivated to win all of them and has asked for more stability in the team.

“We got really close and it is a positive going into the next match. We need to win six in the remaining six matches and that is the only motivation going forward. We need to point out the mistakes we have done and we will try to bounce back strong. We will be having a meeting with management regarding the team changes. If we try to keep the team stable, we will do well in the upcoming matches,” a disappointed Shreyas said after the match.

Stuck on the bottom of the table, Delhi Daredevils will be playing their next match against Rajasthan Royals on Wednesday.
