Sunil Gavaskar has expressed his disappointment over the selection of Hanuma Vihari ahead of batsman Karun Nair in the Indian playing XI for the fifth Test match of the ongoing series against England at The Oval. The Andhra Pradesh cricketer made his international debut in the Oval Test on Friday.

While Nair has been a part of the Indian squad from the very beginning of the series, Vihari was included only for the last two games. And his selection ahead of Nair to replace Hardik Pandya has raised many eyebrows. Gavaskar, who has been a part of the commentary team, stated that Nair had every right to question the management about his exclusion from the team for the last Test.

“He is not your favourite player. The selectors seem to have brought him. Don’t think the team management likes him,” Gavaskar said during the pre-match show.

“Karun Nair has every right to ask the team management why he is not in the team. He deserves an answer. You didn’t pick an extra specialist batsman earlier, but now that you have, Karun Nair deserves an answer.”

The former India skipper further added that he had nothing against Vihari and wished him for his debut game. Nair has played only three games after he hit the triple hundred against England in Chennai back in 2016. The Karnataka-batsman has an average of 62.33 in six Test matches. Vihari, on the other hand, has an impressive first-class average of 59.79 from 63 games.
