India vs Australia | Our batsmen have made too many mistakes, asserts Ricky Ponting
Ricky Ponting has stated that the Australian batsmen have committed too many mistakes, be it technical or mental and that has cost them their wickets in the ongoing Test series. In a series where Indian batsmen have piled on runs, the hosts’ batsmen have failed to make big scores in three Tests.
The Indian team leads the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2-1 and are in the driver's seat in the final match of the series putting a mammoth 622/7 dec. in the first innings. Former Australian captain Ricky Pointing has blamed their batsmen for not scoring enough runs in the series and making too many mistakes which has ultimately led to their downfall.
"As far as I'm concerned, this batting group through this series has made way too many mistakes. Technical, mental, whatever those mistakes may be, they’ve made a lot of mistakes.
"It hasn't necessarily been the first mistake they've made either that's led to them getting out. They've made a lot of mistakes then eventually got out," Ponting told the Cricket Australia website.
The right-hander also assessed that the Indian team was lucky to have the best batting conditions in the Boxing Day Test and yet again in the ongoing match at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
"To be fair, India have probably had the best of the batting conditions. The first part of the game in Melbourne was the best time to bat, and now (day one and two) is going to be the best time to bat here in Sydney.”
Cheteshwar Pujara has looked a class apart in the series scoring three centuries with the biggest one (193) coming in the ongoing match. Apart from him, Rishabh Pant, skipper Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane have made valuable contributions. But Ponting pointed that for Australia, apart from Travis Head, no batsman featured in the top five run-scorers in the series.
"You look at the top five run-scorers and four of them are Indians and we've got Travis Head sitting at No.5 with 217 runs when Rishabh has got 350 as their keeper-batter. That highlights how little impact our batsmen have had on this series."
