IPL 2019 | Our support staff have given us the freedom to express ourselves, says Shreyas Iyer

Delhi Capitals have done extremely well under the watchful eyes of head coach Ricky Ponting and advisor Sourav Ganguly this season. The experienced international stars have shown immense faith in the young guns and in their abilities, which have paid off so far. Skipper Iyer feels that the players have opened up this year and the staff have given them the freedom to express.

"From the last year, our players have become a lot more open and the support staff have given us the freedom to express ourselves. Also we are keeping things very simple and that helps," Iyer said, reported IANS.

Delhi secured a convincing five-wicket win against Rajasthan Royals in their last group stage encounter and are placed second on the points table at the moment. Iyer also spoke about Shikhar Dhawan and Amit Mishra’s consistent run in the season so far and how their presence has helped the budding players. 

"It has been amazing with them being around as they carry a lot of experience. Reading their brains has been amazing for us youngsters and the tips they give us during a match has been great. With Mishi bhai, I have to be around him and keep telling him to back himself with all his experience. It is not difficult because I have been playing with him for five years now. Even though he is experienced, he listens to me," Iyer added.

In the run-chase against Royals, Iyer broke the shackles with some counter-attacking shots but was dismissed after an emphatic start. Pant anchored the run-chase and carried the team over the line with an unbeaten fifty. 

"When I went in, I hit two sixes and either Rishabh or me had to go after to chase it down thinking about the net run-rate. But unfortunately I fell, but Pant played really well to take us home," Iyer concluded.
