Eyebrows were raised when Wriddhiman Saha was picked ahead of Rishabh Pant for the series, but skipper Kohli said that it was the latter’s keeping skills that helped him get the nod. Today, Saha proved his skipper right, grabbing a stupendous one-handed catch diving to his left to dismiss de Bruyn.

Widely considered by many, including skipper Virat Kohli, as the best wicket-keeper in the world, Wriddhiman Saha has been unlucky with injuries in the last 18 months and as a result, also ended up temporarily losing his place in the team to young Rishabh Pant. But having proved his form and fitness in the ‘A’ tour in the Caribbean, Kohli had no second thoughts in picking Saha over Pant when the home season beckoned, citing the latter’s superior keeping skills as the reason. And today, the 34-year-old keeper did justice to his skipper’s words by doing what he does best.

On the fourth ball of the sixth over, Umesh Yadav bowled a half-tracker around Thenuis de Bruyn’s hips, which the batsman nudged fine in hope of getting a free boundary. However, what followed next left de Bruyn in shock, as to his dismay, Saha took off, flew to his left and grabbed the ball out of thin air with his left hand. Knowing the absurdity of the catch, the Indian players instantly mobbed Saha and Kohli even gave the keeper a cheeky kiss on his head. All poor de Bruyn could do was just stand there in disbelief and walk slowly back to the pavilion in shock. And oh, Saha, like a fine wine, is getting better with age, indeed.

Here is how Twitter reacted to Saha’s superhuman effort:
