Shikhar Dhawan has stated that he is getting insights from Ricky Ponting and Sourav Ganguly to prepare for the upcoming World Cup. The former Australia captain is the head coach, whereas the former India captain is the advisor of Dhawan’s Indian Premier League franchise Delhi Capitals.

Ricky Ponting has the record for the highest number of ODI wins as a captain and also leading his side to two World Cup titles apart from winning another one as a non-captain. The Australian has also been regarded as the finest ever captain in world cricket. On the other hand, Sourav Ganguly had taken up over the reigns as India captain when the team was in tatters following the 2000 match-fixing scandal before successfully winning away games, a rarity for India back then. The southpaw even took India to the 2003 World Cup.

Both the legendary captains are a part of the Delhi Capitals support staff, and thereby, working closely with Shikhar Dhawan. And the Indian opener has stated that he has been getting important insights from them both ahead if the extravaganza in May.

“Ricky Ponting and Sourav Ganguly...I am very fortunate that I am working with them now. They both have been great leaders. It is very good to be close to them because I can get their insight, know what was their mindset, what was their approach when they used to play or captain their side,” he explained, at a promotional event for a brand, reported PTI.

“I am already learning so many things from them (and) it is helping me. I am grateful for that. I am sure those things are helping me in the IPL and I am going to take it to the World Cup,” the 33-year-old added.

Prithvi Shaw captained India to the U-19 World Cup in 2018 beating Australia in the finals to bring the cup home. The 19-year-old has even played for India in the longest format against West Indies becoming the youngest ever Indian to score a century on debut. He followed it up with a 70 and unbeaten 33 in his next two innings and Dhawan has remarked that the Maharashtra-batsman is extremely talented and would make it big for India.

“So Prithvi, I would say it is a very big achievement to play for India at the age of 19, especially India is a dominating country for batsmen [and there are] lots of batsmen, so someone coming in at 19 is a big achievement and he has done very well for Indian team. He is a very talented boy and I am sure he is going to do wonders for our country,” he signed off.
