Twitter reacts to Jos Buttler’s ‘leave’ against New Zealand recreating Ashes brain fade
Although the ongoing two-match series between New Zealand and England isn't a part of the ICC Test Championship, the first game had all the elements to make it a perfect Test classic. Adding spice to the it was Jos Buttler’s recreation of his ‘brain fade’ moment that cost England the Ashes.
While New Zealand had taken a monumental lead of 261 after their first innings, having declared on 615/9, England failed to even set a target for the hosts. Jos Buttler, the last genuine batsman in the side, came out to bat at a position when the visitors were struggling on 133/7. The seasoned batsman only survived for 17 deliveries before being uprooted by Neil Wagner on the 18th delivery.
Wagner, from around the wicket with the new ball, delivered a full-length yorker which Buttler quite confidently decided to ‘leave’. The batsman had no clue that the ball crashed into the base of the off stump and gone! He was bowled in by the Kiwi pacer. That marked the end of England’s hopes. This was similar to his ‘leave’ in the fourth Test of Ashes 2019 wherein he hadn’t offered a shot off Josh Hazlewood and the ball which made its way to hit the off stump.
England bat deep, that have Ben Stokes, and they also have an able wicket-keeper batsman. All that about England, the World Cup winners, and yet they faced a shameful defeat at the hands of New Zealand. Buttler, who scored 43 in the first innings while being stranded with the tail on Day 2, had admitted at Stumps Day 4 that the visitors had already fallen behind in the first innings wherein they collapsed from 277/4 to 353 all out.
The match was eventually won by New Zealand by an innings and 65 runs.
Here's how cricket fans on Twitter are reacting to the incident:
