DC vs KKR | Player Ratings - Prithvi Shaw and Kagiso Rabada hand Kolkata their first defeat
Just when you think you have seen everything and have figured out the IPL completely, a Kagiso Rabada stands tall to stop the unstoppable Andre Russell in a shootout. While that might grab most of the headlines, I have decided to give my Man of the Match to the Indian sensation that is Prithvi Shaw.
Prithvi Shaw (9.5/10): It is a shame that he wasn’t able to get his first IPL century in what was a magical innings. But going for a big hit and not worrying about personal glory tells you everything you need to know about this youngster’s thought process. All I will say is, look at the rating and then check out the highlights of his innings.
Shikhar Dhawan (6/10): There has been a lot of noise around the quality of runs he has been scoring of late. And it felt like he bought into the same. After scoring 16 off 7 balls, he, for some reason, still felt the need to go after Chawla. In a team that is filled with young talent, they needed an experienced guy at the crease to help them out.
Shreyas Iyer (7/10): Just when it felt like Iyer was back to his best, he showed why he is not a part of the Indian side. He had just been dropped in the same over, that had added 14 runs by the last ball, and he decided to throw away his wicket. He needs to be more calculative so that the selectors just can’t ignore him anymore.
Rishabh Pant (6/10): Not a typical Pant innings but he did what he had to do. Rotated the strike fairly well and allowed Shaw to do his thing. He still needs to curb that natural instinct of going for big shots and just like Iyer, he needs to understand match situations. He has to take some responsibility for the game going to the Super Over. His Super Over performance meant that I had to take one more point off the ratings.
Colin Ingram (5/10): Not much to do for him but you really cannot miss a ball in the last over of a game. He needs to step up as the only real power hitter in the Delhi side.
Hanuma Vihari (4/10): His decision to go for the big hit with two runs to win will be discussed once the teams go back to the hotel. A simple shot there would definitely be the better option.
Chris Morris (5/10): His bowling performance was on and off throughout. The ankle injury has put a question mark on his selection going into the next few games.
Sandeep Lamichhane (8/10): Playing his first game of the season ahead of Keemo Paul, the Nepal leg-spinner was terrific today - both with the ball and on the field. His leg-spinning variations troubled Robin Uthappa to no end, making sure that Kolkata failed to get off to a good start.
Kagiso Rabada (8/10): How often do you see Rabada conceding 15 runs to bowler-duo? Well, Piyush Chawla and Kuldeep Yadav did just that by taking down as many as 15 runs while making sure that the South African had a torrid bowling figure tonight. That fielding effort, though, deserves more than a trifling mention. That is as good as one can bowl in the Super Over against two proper game finishers. Had to add two points just for those six balls.
Harshal Patel (7.5/10): The Haryana spinner had a field day by dismissing Kolkata’s two in-form batsmen Nitish Rana and Uthappa, but once Russell got into the mood, there was no escape from scathing. However, it was a good performance that helped them get into the lower-middle order in no-time.
Amit Mishra (4.5/10): The leggie spent 36 runs in his quota of overs, while managing to pick only one wicket. His rhythm was disturbed once Russell and Karthik unleashed the fireworks, but I will take a point off him for giving that freebie to Piyush Chawla in the 19th over. You can’t bowl a slider on the pads to anyone who knows a bit of batting, can you?
